Ramadan Prisoners Project

Islam for Ghana is a non-governmental organization dedicated to promoting Islamic values and principles in Ghana.

Ramadan Prisoners Project

The Ramadan Prisoners Project by Islam for Ghana, initiated in 2016 at Nsawam Prisons, is a significant effort to support Muslim inmates during Ramadan. This project was the organization’s first initiative and has made a substantial impact since its inception.

Key Achievements and Activities 1. Feeding Inmates: During the 2016 Eid celebrations, the project successfully provided meals to nearly 9,000 inmates. This act of kindness ensured that the inmates could partake in the festive spirit of Eid, despite being away from their families. 2. Scholarly Visits: The project also facilitated visits from Islamic scholars. These scholars played a crucial role in motivating and inspiring the inmates, offering them spiritual guidance and support. Such interactions are vital for the inmates’ mental and spiritual well-being.

Objectives of the Project

• Providing Food and Refreshments: One of the primary goals is to offer meals and refreshments to Muslim inmates during Eid ul-Adha celebrations. This ensures that they can observe their religious practices with dignity and respect.

• Facilitating Scholarly Visits: Arranging visits by Islamic scholars is another key objective. These visits help in preaching, motivating, and educating inmates on Islamic values, fostering a sense of community and spiritual growth.

• Distributing Prayer Mats and Qur’ans: The project also focuses on providing essential religious items such as prayer mats and Qur’ans. This enables the inmates to engage in worship and enhance their spiritual journey.

Impact on Inmates

By supporting Muslim inmates during Ramadan, the Ramadan Prisoners Project aims to promote their spiritual well-being, foster rehabilitation, and encourage positive change. The initiative not only addresses their immediate needs but also helps in their long-term personal development and reintegration into society.

This project highlights the importance of compassion and support for incarcerated individuals, ensuring that they are not forgotten during significant religious observances. It serves as a model for similar initiatives worldwide, demonstrating how faith-based support can make a meaningful difference in the lives of prisoners.
